Chapter 5

“You knew whoever that was,” I said as soon as we were in Rowan’s apartment. “Who was she? Why does she hate you?”

He strode past me, setting his wallet on the counter and opening the refrigerator. I walked in between him and his beers.

“Who was she?” I repeated. “I think I should know who I’m up against.”

“Knowing who she isn’t won’t affect how you fight against them,” he said. He grabbed me around the waist and moved me away from the refrigerator. I could feel the warmth of his hands linger on my skin. He grabbed a beer and sat down on his armchair. I walked over toward him and turned on the star globe. The stars burst onto the ceiling.

“She must have been important,” I said. “You loved her.”

“Love doesn’t exist,” Rowan said. “Didn’t you hear Micah? It’s Incandescence. We love others because of a little light inside ourselves that make us feel warm and powerful. We love ourselves and it makes us believe that we love others.”

“Tell me who she was,” I said. He shook his head.

“You’re too young to understand,” he said. I grabbed his beer and took a few steps back away from him. I dangled it in front of him.

“Tell me her name at least,” I said. “Or you won’t get your beer back.”

He burst out of his seat. One of his hands reached for the beer while his other arm wrapped around my back. He took the beer back as I fell back against his arm. He sipped from the bottle.

“I don’t lose, Rory,” he said. He moved his arm away from my back, but he remained close to me. “I don’t bargain either.”

“You lost her,” I murmured. He took another sip of the beer.

“True,” he said. He wrapped a strand of my hair around his finger. I turned my head away. “What? You didn’t like it last time? You seemed to love it when I was inside you.”

“Well.” I took a step back, my face burning red. “I, um, hadn’t...done it before.”

Now, his face flushed.

“What? No. You didn’t bleed. You’re eighteen or nineteen years old,” he said. “What the hell did you do during your prom?”

“Um, my friends and I drank and had fun,” I said. He rubbed his temple. “It’s not a big deal. I...just didn’t imagine it would be like that.”

“No,” he said. “It is a big deal. I’m sorry.”

He stepped away from me. I didn’t want him to.

“That has to be the first time you’ve apologized for something,” I said. He smirked.

“The second time,” he said. I tilted my head. “Her name is Leona. We were committed to each other...”

He took a sip from his beer and sat back down. I sat on the armrest again. I took his hand and slipped my fingers in between his fingers. My fingers looked like twigs compared to his larger hands. His thumb caressed the side of my finger.

“She had a friend. This friend had already fallen but we didn’t know it at the time.
